Legislation relating to age discrimination is designed to protect individuals of all ages. It is designed to provide legal protection to those who are discriminated, harassed or victimised on the grounds of age.

Discrimination law protects employees and those in training positions as well as those applying for work.

Discrimination may take the form of direct or indirect behaviour. In some circumstances, employers treating people differently on the grounds of age may not be contrary to legislation. However, the employer must demonstrate and justify their acts by reference to specific aims contained within legislation. These include a workforce of a similar age where they are all approaching retirement age or protection of younger workers in for reasons of health and safety.
